    M1503.1 General.

    Range hoods shall discharge to the outdoors through a duct. The duct serving the hood shall have a smooth interior surface, shall be air tight, shall be equipped with a back-draft damper and shall be independent of all other exhaust systems. Ducts serving range hoods shall not terminate in an attic or crawl space or areas inside the building.By requiring the ducts to have smooth inner walls, this section prohibits the use of flexible and semirigid corrugated ducts for range hood exhaust. As with all exhaust systems, the exhaust must discharge to the outdoors, not to an attic or crawl space or ridge, soffit, gable or roof vent

    The ducts must be sealed air tight to prevent leakage of air and grease into wall and ceiling cavities. Ducts should be sealed with a material that is suitable for long-term exposure to elevated temperatures. Backdraft dampers prevent the infiltration of outdoor air when the exhaust system is not operating. The hood manufacturer’s instructions may require that the ducts be installed with a minimum clearance to combustibles
